Touch of Red
Touch of Red by Laura Griffin is $1.99! This is a romantic suspense novel and Elyse gave it a B grade:
If you like a solid mystery/thriller with some hot sex scenes and a romance subplot, then this book should work well for you. If you need your romantic suspense romance-driven, then it might not. I was frustrated with how the element of Brooke’s stalker was handled, but engrossed enough in the larger mystery that it didn’t pull me too far out of the book.
When crime scene investigator Brooke Porter arrives at the home of a murdered woman, the only thing more shocking than the carnage is the evidence that someone escaped the scene. But where is this witness now? A thorough search of the area yields more questions than answers, and before Brooke even packs up her evidence kit, she’s made it her goal to find the witness and get them out of harm’s way.
Homicide detective Sean Byrne has seen his share of bloody crime scenes, but this one is particularly disturbing, especially because Brooke Porter is smack in the middle of it. Sean has had his eye on the sexy CSI for months, and he’s determined to help her with her current case—even if it means putting his attraction on hold so he and Brooke can track down a murderer. But as the investigation—and their relationship—heats up, Sean realizes that keeping his work and his personal life separate is more complicated than he ever imagined; especially when the killer sets his sights on Brooke.
Lady Eleanor’s Seventh Suitor
Lady Eleanor’s Seventh Suitor by Anna Bradley is 99c! This is the first book in The Sutherland Sisters series and features an “ice queen” heroine; I know that’s catnip for some of you. Readers say the tension between the hero and heroine is probably their favorite part. However, some readers felt the romance felt more like lust than love.
Two sought-after sisters, a slew of suitors—and a vow to hold out for true love. How many proposals will it take to get to “I do”—especially when the stakes are high . . .
There have been six suitors so far, all vying for the attention—and generous dowry—of the beautiful, elusive Eleanor Sutherland. What does this woman really want? Who has what it takes to melt the heart of the so-called Lady Ice? These are the questions Camden West keeps asking himself. But rather than wait for answers, Cam takes matters into his own hands . . . for he has a secret weapon.
Cam knows that Ellie’s sister, Charlotte, harbors a scandalous secret—one that could bring ruin to the Sutherland name. If Ellie marries him, Cam promises to keep mum. But is she willing to sacrifice her own happiness for her sister’s reputation?
To Ellie’s surprise, it becomes clear that Cam doesn’t need her money, nor is he interested in her status. Soon, what begins as a sham engagement transforms into something deeper, and more passionate, than Ellie could have imagined. Is it possible that all Cam truly wanted was her? And is that reason enough to say yes—or is handsome Cam hiding something else? Even for a lady in love, only the truth will do . . .
Goddess Born by Karie Edgren is 99c! This is the first book in the Goddess Born series and seems to have an interesting premise. Some readers mentioned that the writing took a while to get used to, though others found the original plot really delivered in execution. Have you read this one?
Selah Kilbrid keeps a dangerous secret: she has the power to heal.
A direct descendent of the Celtic goddess Brigid, it’s Selah’s sacred duty to help those in need. But as the last of the Goddess Born living in the New World, she learned from an early age to keep her supernatural abilities hidden. The Quaker community of Hopewell has always been welcoming, but there’s no doubt they would see her hanged if her gift was revealed.
When a prominent minister threatens to try her with witchcraft unless she becomes his wife, Selah has only one hope–that her betrothed, a distant cousin from Ireland, arrives as planned. Marrying Samuel would keep her secret safe, preserve her sacred bloodline, and protect her from being charged as a witch.
But when news of Samuel’s death reaches the Colonies, Selah is truly on her own. Terrified, she faces an impossible choice–forfeit her powers and marry the loathsome Nathan? Or find an imposter to pose as her husband and preserve her birthright?
Silver and Bone
Silver and Bone by Claudia Cain is 99c! I saw this book on Twitter from Sil of The Book Voyagers. She mentioned that is has a bisexual vampire detective heroine – HELLO! There are some info-dumps in the book that bog down the action, according to reviews. But many loved the characters and the central mystery.
Jennifer Jones is trying to be a better person.
It’s not easy. She has a lot to make up for, considering that she’s an immortal blood-sucker with a history of serial killing. But at least she probably can’t get worse.
And for the last seventy years, things have been going well. She’s got a job, friends she cares about, a steady relationship, and she hasn’t killed a single human.
But something dark is on the horizon. A body appears in an alley, bringing up unsettling memories. A Necromancer warns of an approaching menace, and as more and more bodies begin to appear, repeating a very familiar pattern, Jennifer finds herself being framed for murder.
Someone is out for revenge, and they’re willing to kill to get it.
You might be able to ignore your past, but you can’t outrun it, and Jennifer’s has just caught up to her.
