Café for Sacramento domestic violence shelter celebrates 5 years – KCRA Sacramento

A business built on giving back celebrated a milestone Tuesday.My Sister’s Café opened its doors in Sacramento five years ago. The café is a volunteer-based program to help fund My Sister’s House, a domestic violence shelter aimed at helping women and children of Asian and Pacific Islander descent.The café is also a work-training program that helps survivors build job skills.“I was able to complete the food handling certificate, and I got that and that was able to open a door for me to go out there and do what I got to do to survive and take care of myself and my daughter,” a survivor said.My Sister’s House helped the survivor with job training, getting a house and buying a car.“Everywhere I go, I will always look back and remember My Sister’s House. (They) will always be my family because, without them, I would never make it to where I am today,” she said.My Sister’s House is the only domestic violence organization out of more than 100 organizations in California that operates a café to help provide job training support for its survivors. My Sister’s Café funds the Women to Work program.“Five years is hard for any restaurant to stay open, but this is such a special restaurant,” Executive Director Nilda Valmores said. “My Sister’s Café helps support our job training efforts for our domestic violence survivors and our human trafficking survivors and that’s why this is so important.” My Sister’s House typically works with 400 women a year, and it answers more than 3,000 crisis hotline calls.My Sister’s House has two fundraisers coming up in the next two months: A fashion show on April 18 at Macy’s and a gala on May 13.“We want all survivors to be free of abuse,” Valmores said. “We want them to be able to make their own choices. And we know that those choices include having some economic freedom.”
