WWDC Final Report: How Did Our Predictions Turn Out This Year?

Under Software, we said:

Next generation versions of iOS and macOS will lead the way on Monday. We should also see updated versions of both tvOS for Apple TV and watchOS for Apple Watch.

Little is known about any of these software upgrades, which suggests these could be incremental updates, at best.

What to watch for. While most of the focus next week will be on “iOS 11,” I’m most interested in seeing what’s happening on the tvOS front. Will Amazon Video on Apple TV finally be announced? Will tvOS get a significant design change? Could Cupertino surprise us and announce the next Apple TV?

Verdict: We were mostly right, although we’re confident we’ll hear much more about tvOS this fall.

For Hardware, we suggested:

Apple’s expected to reveal its long-rumored Siri-powered speaker next week alongside new iPads. We are also likely to see next-generation Macs.

What to look for. It’s going to be interesting to see just how many design changes have been made on the new iPads. Will the “10.5-inch iPad Pro” include many of the features expected on the next iPhone? Will those features also extend to the second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro? Will Apple mention what’s become of the iPad mini? Will the 9.7-inch iPad Pro get its pink slip?

Verdict: Pretty close, in that everything we thought would be announced was. One unknown remains, although we may never hear Apple actually mention the words that the iPad mini is dead.
