Like most working people, finding the time to exercise during the work week can be a struggle. Therefore, many people fine that most of their exercising is concentrated on the weekends. The question is: if I can’t find the time to exercise daily, is it still beneficial to be a ‘Weekend Warrior’, and if so, how beneficial is it?
The benefits of exercise are that it helps us look and feel better. When you look and feel better you are more likely to desire and engage in sex. We also know that exercise helps to reduce the rate of cardiovascular disease, such as heart attacks and stroke. It can also help to prevent a variety of different cancers.
A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine addressed these important questions. Almost 64,000 adults were followed prospectively for 18 years. “Adequate exercise over the weekend was defined as 150 minutes of mediocre, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity for 1-2 sessions per weekend.”
The results showed that “Weekend Warriors” had all the essential benefits of people who exercised daily. Compared with non-exercisers, both “Weekend Warriors” and Daily Exercisers, decreased their risk of death from cardiovascular disease by 40%. Both reduced the risk of death from cancer by 20%. Both groups decreased their “all-cause” mortality by 30-35%.
So if you find yourself unable to exercise during the week be sure to take advantage of weekends off from work. Become a “Weekend Warrior” and enjoy all the health benefits of doing so.
