And it’s mostly not coming from the salt shaker. According to the American Heart Association, the average American consumes about 3,400 milligrams of sodium every day — far higher than the “ideal” limit of 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day or the upper limit of of 2,300 milligrams per day (which, by the way, is ONE teaspoon of salt!). And eating out a lot can really break the sodium bank: More than 75% of that sodium intake comes from processed, prepackaged, and RESTAURANT foods.
